
He entered the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. He also appeared in The Killing, a drama series that was aired across the world. He then appeared in Those Who Kill II and Borgen III, two other well-known Danish dramas. He also played the lead role in Sherlock the show, which is a BBC drama in which He played Charles Augustus Magnussen, whose blackmailer. In the American TV show House of Cards, he was the role of President Russia. He was awarded an International Emmy Award for 2018 for his part on the Danish TV drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm. In addition to his mother tongue Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English and has also mastered various accents. According to Mikkelsen, he and his brother were taught English through Monty Python records.
