Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford started to become interested in acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up and was added to her resume in 1996.
